Back when I lived together with my grandparents I used to go over the field, to get to a young forest growing on top of a former dumping ground ... Walking trough the forest I could see how the chemicals from the trash in the ground affected the growth of the plants. A large set of the trees were weak and rotten, while still standing up right, holding each other up with their twigs.
The ground was covered in nettles.
While the nettles were beautiful, I found the forest lacking diversity. So I decided to spend a few weeks creating a little niche inside the forest. At first I removed a spot of nettles and brought some dead leaves and branches here. The idea was to create something for insects to hide and live in. Ideally the insects would also be eaten by larger animals, such as birds or mice, which are eaten again by bigger animals, creating a food chain. Of course there were already plenty such food chains before my well-meant experiment ... yet hopefully my efforts in
